For an exciting weekend of wine tasting in a great setting, surrounded by wine buffs and some of the island's top wine makers, visit the Pollensa Wine Fair at the Cloisters of Santo Domingo. The event kicks off at 10 am on Saturday 11th of May and runs through until 2 pm on Sunday 12th of May. If you are staying nearby, this is a great chance to get a taste of viticulture in Mallorca and a fine way to spend a day in Pollensa.
The Pollensa Wine Fair was created in 2004 by the Primitive Wine Association in conjunction with the Pollensa Town Hall, initially as a meeting place for wine trade professionals but has grown over the years into a popular wine tasting event in its own right, attracting thousands of visitors over the 2 days and becoming THE wine event on the island, a wine tasting weekend set in magnificent surroundings in the heart of old town Pollensa.
This year will be the 16th edition of the Pollensa Wine Fair and it is rumoured that 4 new winneries will be joining the ranks, to showcase its home made and rather unique wines.
The Pollensa Wine Fair will be presenting 39 wineries from Mallorca, showcasing all the best wines and wineries on the island and providing a meeting point for wine trade professionals, wine makers and wine lovers and an opportunity to discover and sample the different and varied wines made in Mallorca.
Not all of the Mallorca wine producers are present, but a good selection will be and the air is festive and fun.
A significant number of the wines displayed in the Pollensa Wine Fair have won both National and International awards, giving the fair an added kudos and making this a high end wine event on a par with many European wine fairs.
The Pollensa Wine Fair is however a very local event and is concentrated entirely on the Balearic Islands wine industry. Some years have seen wineries from Menorca and Ibiza taking part and this year there is much expectation because of the addition of a new winery.
The event takes place on Saturday 11th of May from 10.00 to 20.30 and on Sunday 12th of May from 10.00 to 14.00, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the fair, discover, sample, taste... but do be forewarned that peak times around midday can become extremely crowded and last entrance is an hour before closing time.
The 2019 Pollensa Wine Fair is also a chance to buy Mallorca wines at discounted prices as some of the wineries offer deals on wine bought at the fair.
Several members of the Association will offer a special Wine Fair menu over the weekend, which will include Pollensa lamb accompanied by Mallorcan wines.
A total of 10 restaurants have joined the initiative and a leaflet with the different menu proposals will be distributed in the Wine Fair welcome bag.
Further information can be found on the Primitive Wine Association facebook page.
The other restaurants of the Association (a total of fifty) will be placing Mallorcan wines on the table with the image of the Fair 2019.
The main Mallorca wine producing areas, the Binissalem and Pla i Llevant, have been awarded their own Denominacion de Origen label, abbreviated D.O., which stands for controlled appellation of provenance for quality wines in Spain. Some of the younger wine producers have opted out of the D.O., preferring to remain independent and invest in innovation instead.
The fertile wine regions in the foothills of the Tramuntana Mountains and the vast central plain produce some of the islands' finest brews. Lime rich soil and the barrier effect of the mountain range, coupled with long dry summers and mild winters conspire to create perfect wine making conditions.
